Duval County ARES

Radio Merit Badge
Jamboree On The Air

In 2009 we hosted the Boy Scouts at the Marshside Campus and we are excited about doing it again. While we had a good turnout and were able to get kids on the air, we need to do more to help them. In 2010 we need YOUR help. We are looking for several types of people that can provide valuable services (click to expand):

  • Merit Badge Instructors
  •      The Merit Badge Instructor is someone willing to take one or more areas of expertise from the merit badge requirements and conduct short (30 min or less) lessons to teach the Scouts these concepts.

  • Event Tour Guides
  •      Event Tour Guides are volunteers that take visitors around the event area and explain the various activities. This could include describing the radios and antennas in use, explaing the different modes of communications, etc.

  • Event Mentors
  •      Event Mentors are those volunteers standing ready to answer any radio-related questions that our visitors may have.

Dates: October 16-17, 2010
Times: 9am Sat - 12pm Sun

The event will be very similar to Field Day with multiple operating stations setup. Envision it as a Field Day for Scouts. We plan to operate on 20M, 40M, and 80M and will use both voice and digital communications. If the timing works out we will also try to catch a satellite pass or two. This is a fun time for everyone involved and an excellent opportunity to get young minds excited about the world of amateur radio.

There will be some Scouts camping overnight but you are not obligated to do so. However, it would be appreciated if some members could be available at odd hours to lend a hand to those Scouts still wanting to make contacts.

If you are interested in helping with any of the positions described above or you're able to help setup and/or takedown antennas, tables, tents, etc. please let us know as soon as possible.
